The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Globeology Has First 3D Exhibit in the Nation

Colorado is home to the first live-action 3D exhibit, and it’s right in your backyard!  …well, depending on how close you live to Globeology at The Wildlife Experience.  That’s right!  Globeology has incorporated 3D technology into their already incredible exhibit.
This exhibit opened just yesterday (June 30th), and Claire and I got a sneak peek [...]

How to Have a Fantastic Road Trip, Even with Kids!

Warmer breezes are blowing. The sun is lingering longer before slipping behind the mountains. Far off locales are tempting us with their siren songs, and even the places in our own backyard are whispering promises of a much-needed retreat.
The summer travel season is almost here!
Last year, we decided to take advantage of the [...]

To pierce or not to pierce (ears, that is)

“Momma? When can I get my ears pierced?”
This was a question I’d anticipated, but not for a few more years. Claire is four-years old, and I knew it would come up eventually.
I answered with my standard I’ve-been-caught-off-guard response, which consists of, “Well, that’s a great question!” …stalling, stalling, stalling. “Why do you ask?” [...]

Picture Day Sticker Shock

Picture Day Sticker Shock

Back when I was in Elementary School, Picture Day came once a year. It was the one day a year when it really mattered that your hair was combed, and your clothes were clean and straight, and that you didn’t fall down on the playground at recess.
(Here is my 1979-80 Kindergarten Photo, both the [...]

Our American Girl Adventure

For Claire’s fourth birthday, her grandparents gave her a brand new baby doll, and she named her Rose. Baby Rose is an American Girl Doll. Normally, when I tell people this, I get one of three possible reactions: They either look at me with a blank stare, swoon while gasping, or they [...]

Pretending to be Brave

As soon as March rolls around, we’re ready for spring.  Yes, the weather is pretty mild here in the Denver area.  (Those residents who didn’t do hard time in the brutal winters of the Midwest think it’s actually cold here, but we know differently.)  Even with all the sunshine we get here in Colorado, as [...]

“What does this say, Momma?”
“What does that say?”
These are questions I get constantly, every day from my four year old. She’s been asking these questions for years.
She comes by this honestly. I have a very vivid memory from before I went to Kindergarten of looking at a piece of paper on the kitchen [...]

An Adventure in Every Bucket – Win a Bucket of Treasure Dough!

My 4-year old daughter loves playing with play-dough (homemade versions and the official store-bought brand of similar spelling). She loves making doughy objects, serving me food items, and creating her own creatures. She even loves mixing the colors together. Try as I might, this still makes me twitch…but that’s not what this [...]

I forgot

I forgot

Last Monday was one of those days. It was one of those days where tiny little things, as innocuous as single, solitary ants suddenly converge in a mass of creatures that can fell a rainforest.

In the midst of this, was Claire. All she really wanted was for me to help her tie [...]
