What can you do with a piece of paper and pencil?

If you’re like me, you’ll be road tripping it this summer. My definition of a successful road trip is no one throwing up and no whining. So, for road trips, fun for restaurants, waiting rooms, whatever, here are a few easy ideas to do with a pencil and paper.

Hangman
Think of a word, write a line for each letter, draw a gallows (an L shape), the other players try to guess the letters in the word. Each incorrect letter adds a body part to the gallows. The object is to guess the word before you get “hung” – a full body picture on the gallows.

This game is really fun with seven year olds who can’t spell! It’s like trying to guess phonetic words with letters jumbled up. Yup, big fun!

Tic-Tac-Toe
You know this one, right?

Boxes (printable)
Draw lots of dots, then take turns to draw lines between the dots. The object is to make a box to put in your initial. The winner is the one with the most boxes.

Morse Code Writing
Print out the code and have your kids make secret messages in Morse Code

Pencil rubbings (great for the younger crowd)
Put coins, keys, or a comb under the paper and rub with the side of the pencil.
