Weekly Event Round-up: Bird Day Festival, Botanic Bow Wow and More!
Friday. P’zazz Children’s Choir and Dynamix Teen Vocal Sensations present “Broadway’s Orphans,” featuring songs from Broadway musicals about kids on their own. If there’s one thing Broadway loves, it’s a scrappy kid trying to make good. The performance includes songs from shows like “Annie,” “Oliver Twist,” and “Les Miserables,” as well as from Disney orphan flicks “Aladdin” and “Tarzan.” The choirs will also add in a little pop fun with songs by Michael Jackson, Avril Lavigne and the Jonas Brothers. 7 p.m. tonight. Sunday. Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day at the Colorado Chautauqua’s Bird Day festival. One-hour family hikes will take guests around the Chautauqua grounds to explore bird habitats. Back at the Community House, kids’ activities will keep hands and minds busy. Make a bird feeder, learn how to identify local bird species, do nature sketches, play games andmore. Saturday. Five Points is going to be “Cool, Crazy and Hot” at the 7th annual Five Points Jazz Fest. The festival features a full afternoon of live performances, and also salutes the culture and history of the Five Points neighborhood. The Stiles African American Heritage Center will be open free of charge, and festivalgoers are invited to drop by the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library to check out an exhibit on the Negro Baseball Leagues. There’s also a marketplace with food and shopping, plus sidewalk-chalk artists who need a little help from the kids. If Fido’s been begging to smell the flowers at the Denver Botanic Gardens, now’s his chance: The Botanic Bow Wow welcomes dogs and their families for an afternoon of running, playing and, most important, sniffing. Gardeners will want to catch a class on creating a pet-friendly yard. Watch canine contests for Best Trick and Dog-Owner Lookalike and see police dog demonstrations, too. As a bonus, human guests will get a free ticket to visit the Gardens again before June 30. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Denver Botanic Gardens, 1007 York St.; 720-865-3500. Through Sept. 4. Everyone’s favorite Lost Boy flies into Boulder’s Dinner Theatre in the classic musical “Peter Pan.” Join Wendy, Peter, Tink and the whole gang on their adventure through Never Never Land. And if you’re a fan of pirates, this show’s got plenty in Captain Hook and his ragtag band of mercenaries. The music, from the Broadway show, includes hummable hits like “I Won’t Grow Up” and “I’m Flying.” 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 6:15 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays; noon and 6:15 p.m. Sundays.
