Weekly Event Round-up: MLK Day Marade, Charlie Brown and More!
Monday. Salute the legacy of Martin Luther King at the 25th annual MLK Day Marade. The combination march-and-parade starts at City Park, where walkers will assemble. From there, the marade courses through town to Civic Center Park — a rally at Civic Center will cap the day’s celebration. The marade route is nearly 3 miles long, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. 9 a.m. Monday. City Park, 17th Avenue and Josephine Street. Free.
Saturdays. Youngsters can learn all about the shining sounds of brass music at the Denver Brass’s roving “Tiny Tots Love Music” concerts. Starring the Denver Brass 5 ensemble, each concert is geared toward little ones age 4 and younger. There won’t be much squirming in seats and loud “shush”es, either — the music is light and kid-friendly, and audience participation (including clapping and dancing) is encouraged. The shows run on Saturdays through Feb. 27, with additional performances on Feb. 16 and March 27. Visit denverbrass.org for a full list of times and locations. 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Peace Lutheran Church, 5675 Field St., Arvada. Admission is $5. For more information, call 303-832-HORN or check out denverbrass.org.
Ongoing. Have a mountain adventure at the Evergreen Lake ice rink — no lift tickets required. Open daily, the frozen, 40-acre lake is great for impromptu hockey practice, broomball or just freestyle skating around. Bring your own skates, or rent a pair at the lake. Be sure to call the skating hotline before heading up — hours may vary depending on the weather and the ice. 3-7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 3-8 p.m. Fridays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays. Evergreen Lake, 29614 Upper Bear Creek Road, Evergreen. Hotline: 720-880-1391. Admission is $5 for adults age 19-59, $4.75 for youth ages 4 to 18, $4.50 for military and seniors age 60 and older. Skate rental is $6 for up to two hours.
Friday-Monday. Follow a day in the life of Charlie Brown in Gravity Defied Theatre’s production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Inspired by Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts,” the musical interweaves` stories about some of the comic strip’s favorite characters. Lucy chases Schroeder, Linus loves his blanket, Snoopy dreams big and Charlie Brown is, as always, Charlie Brown. The show runs Fridays through Sundays through Jan. 31, with an additional performance at 7 p.m. Monday. 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 4 p.m. Sundays. Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9900 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora; 303-739-1970. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students, $10 for children. Purchase advance tickets at rmarts.org.
Monday-Thursday. Explore the wonderfully weird world of Diffendoofer Elementary in “The Differentest School of All,” the latest children’s production at Town Hall Arts Center. Based on Dr. Seuss’s book “Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!”, the musical shows how the kooky staff and students of Diffendoofer prepare for a threatening standardized test. (Sound familiar?) With a little help from the audience, the whole school can pass the test, quirks and all. 10 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. and noon Saturdays. Town Hall Arts Center, 2450 W. Main St., Littleton; 303-794-2787. Tickets are $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for kids. To buy advance seats, call or visit townhallartscenter.com.
