When my son was 4, I tried giving him nutritional supplements to make up for his appalling diet. I mixed fish oil into his orange juice. I let him eat candylike gummy multivitamins. And I stirred a chocolate powder containing 31 fruit and vegetable extracts into his milk.
It eased my worries, but experts disagree on [...]

Daily Daily-Safeway Holiday Menu

Daily Daily-Safeway Holiday Menu

I had a chance to browse Safeway last night.  There are yellow price tags everywhere.  Some of them are for the weekly sales, but many of them are their new everyday prices.

A key to saving the most at Safeway is signing up for their club card.  It’s simple and only takes a few minutes.  If you are new to Safeway and need a card, stop at customer service and they’ll help you!  Overall I was pretty happy with my total grocery bill last night.  Like any other grocery store, you have to watch the prices and shop around.  If you shop their sales and use coupons, you can save just as much if not more as any other store.

If you are a coupon shopper, you can use both a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon.  The gentleman I talked to said you can do this as long as you aren’t getting the item free.  I’m not sure I like that rule as I love getting free stuff!  They also double coupons to increase your savings.  Anything $.99 and below will be doubled($.51-$.99 is rounded up to $1.00 off).  Coupons over $1.00 are redeemed at face value.

After looking through the other sales ads for the week, Safeway came through with the best prices on hams.  You can get a Safeway Shank Half or Whole Ham for only $.89 per pound or if you prefer the Spiral Hams, they are only $1.39 per pound.  This will most likely be the best price we see on hams.  If you would rather go with a prime rib, check out their Rancher’s Reserve Beef Ribeye Roast for only $4.99lb.

The key to having an enjoyable holiday for me is to keep things simple.  I’ve created a mock holiday menu that is sure to please your crowd.  The best part-it should only cost you around $30.00 total!

Appetizers:

Veggie Tray:(approx $4)

  • 1 lb carrots $.69
  • Celery $.79
  • Cucumber $.79 each
  • Green Onion $.59(use half in the veggie tray($.30))
  • Dip(I knew I forgot to price check something!) should be around $1.50

Cheeseball & Crackers:(approx $4)

  • Cream Cheese $.98
  • Green Onion(other half of package from veggie tray-$.30)
  • Beef(can you tell I was shopping with two children) approx $1($.57 at Walmart the other day)
  • Wheat Thins $1.99

Main Course:(approx $13.64)

  • 1 Safeway Shank Half or Whole Ham 8.75lbs $7.79
  • 1 can Pineapple $1(Put in the crockpot with the ham and sprinkle with brown sugar.  Cook on low 6-8 hours…delicious!)
  • 3lbs Garnet Yams $1.47
  • Safeway Frozen Green Beans $1.88(steam and season-Lawrys or Lemon Pepper tastes great!)
  • Safeway Brown n Serve Rolls $1.50

Dessert:(approx $8.28)

  • Sara Lee Oven Fresh Frozen Fruit Pies Buy 1, Get 1 Free $6.99 for 2
  • Cool Whip Topping $1.29

You may prefer to have more items that this, but really what I listed should feed at least 6-8 people for around $30.

Most likely you’ll have some leftovers and if you were one of the lucky winners, you have leftover money on that giftcard!  Stretch the money further and make another meal!  You could make soup with the leftover veggies and ham or try this recipe…if you’re lucky you’ll have enough ham to make two more meals!

Egg Bake for the next morning:(approx $7-but you won’t use all of the ingredients)

  • 1.5-2 cups leftover chopped ham
  • 1 loaf bread $1.99-only use 6 slices
  • 1 dozen eggs $1.20-use 8
  • 1 8oz pkg shredded cheddar cheese $1.99-use 2 cups
  • 1 gal milk $1.99-use 2cups

Combine eggs and milk then add remaining ingredients.  Pour into a greased 9×13 pan.  Cover and refridgerate overnight.  Bake uncovered on 350° for 45-50 minutes.  I often use ground pork sausage with this recipe(goes on sale for $1 at Albertsons occasionally)

Serve with fresh clementines-5lb box for $4.88(only $3.88 if you have the $1.00 off coupon from the 12-06 Smart Source insert in the Denver Post)

If your kids would prefer a bowl of cereal, be sure to check out their Kelloggs Corn Flakes.  Get them free-details here!  Or purchase 4 boxes of various Kellogg’s cereals for $1.49 each and use this $5.00 off 4 printable coupon to get them for only $.24 each!

Safeway also has 12 days of free items.  You can find the list of what you’ll get free each day until December 24th here(must purchase $20 or more).

As you can see, you can strecth $50 quite a ways at Safeway.  Remember to shop the sales, and start using some coupons!  Starting in January I’ll be matching the sales with coupons for Safeway over on DenverMetroMoms.  Be sure to tune in and learn how to lower your grocery bill to only $40.00 per week!
