Weekly Event Round-up: Alice in Wonderland, the Backyard Bang Rail Jam and A Dickens of a Christmas Train
In the Denver area and looking for some fun things to do with your family this weekend? The Mile High Mamas’ weekly event round-up has a little something for everyone!
Saturday-Sunday. Holiday light displays get the science-fiction treatment at the “Hudson Holiday” event at Hudson Gardens and Event Center. Presented by the Museum of Outdoor Arts, the display’s centerpiece is a literal interpretation of the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick. Surrounding the flock of sparkly sheep are all sorts of holiday amusements: carriage rides, a decorated house and many more twinkling treats. The event runs on various dates through Jan. 3. 5-9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Hudson Gardens and Event Center, 6115 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton; 303-797-8565. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for kids ages 4 to 12. Kids age 3 and younger are free. For advance tickets and the full Hudson Holiday schedule, call or visit hudsonholiday.org.
Saturday. Unless a serious blizzard blows through, there isn’t much snowboarding in downtown Denver. On Saturday, a slice of ski-town life comes to Denver in the first annual Backyard Bang Rail Jam. Professional and amateur snowboarders from around the state will gather in the Golden Triangle neighborhood to compete at the Art Institute of Colorado. Spectators are welcome to stop by and take in the urban snowboarding scene — get autographs from pro riders, check out the custom snowboards for sale, grab a snack and listen to a DJ spin tunes. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Art Institute of Colorado, 1200 Lincoln St.; 303-837-0825. Admission is free.
Saturday-Sunday. Take a tumble down the rabbit hole with Alice in the Denver Victorian Playhouse’s production of “Alice in Wonderland.” Based on Lewis Carroll’s book, it’s the classic version of the tale: Alice ends up in Wonderland and makes all sorts of strange, new friends as she tries to make her way back to real life. Presented by the Vic’s children’s theater program, the young cast also created all the sets and costumes. 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 20. Denver Victorian Playhouse, 4201 Hooker St.; 303-433-4343. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children age 12 and younger. For advance seats, call or visit denvervic.com.
Friday-Sunday. Celebrate the holidays with Ebenezer Scrooge and the gang on “A Dickens of a Christmas Train,” presented by the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. Cozy up in a train car as it chugs into the evening, with readers passing through to perform scenes from Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.” Carolers will belt out tunes, too, to keep spirits high. By the end of the ride, Scrooge is a changed man — and Santa makes an appearance, too. Departures at 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. Saturday. Rio Grande Scenic Railroad Alamosa Station, 601 State Ave.; 877-726-RAIL. Coach tickets are $22 for adults and $14 for children age 12 and younger. Add $10 for dome tickets. Call to purchase advance tickets. For more information, check riograndescenicrailroad.com.
Saturday. Help downtown Boulder get shined up for the holiday season at “Switch on the Holidays.” Santa will be on hand to flip the switch to the thousands of lights on the county courthouse, down Pearl Street and on Flagstaff Mountain’s star. All-vocal rock group Face will provide the soundtrack. Once everything’s lit up, head to the downtown ice rink for an ice show and “Light Up The Night,” starring Tweedles the Elf. 5 p.m. Saturday. The 1300 block of Pearl Street, Boulder. Admission is free. For more information, visit dbi.org.
