Weekly Event Round-up: James and the Giant Peach and the Butterfly Pavilion’s Living Storybook Halloween Party
Mile High Mamas’ weekly event round-up has a little something for everyone!
Friday. Washington Park will be filled with speedy spooks at the 10th annual Scream Scram, a 5K run/walk for the whole family. Costumes are encouraged for kids and grownups alike as they take on the course. Effort will be rewarded — there are prizes for the fastest runners and the best costumes. Kids can also sprint for snacks at the 100-meter Spooky Sneak, where every kid gets a treat bag for running. Dogs and strollers are welcome, too. Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. 6-10 p.m. Friday night. Washington Park, Downing Street and Louisiana Avenue. Friday-Saturday.Watch the amazing story of “James and the Giant Peach” unfold at Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids’ production of the popular children’s tale. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, the play features James and all his insect pals as they escape the clutches of James’s nasty aunts. The friends take refuge in a giant peach, which unexpectedly becomes mobile, and hijinks ensue. 7 p.m. Friday night, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. The Magic Playhouse, 5311 Western Ave., Boulder; 303-245-8150. For matinees, tickets are $10 for kids age 12 and younger, $12 for adults. For evening performances, kids’ tickets are $9, adults $11. Saturday-Sunday. The Butterfly Pavilion turns into a giant, living storybook at Bug A Boo, the Pavilion’s Halloween party. Characters from all sorts of children’s favorites will be in attendance — Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Little Miss Muffet and more. Kid-friendly activities will be everywhere, too, from crafts to movies. Costumes are encouraged, of course, to add to the whimsical atmosphere. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Butterfly Pavilion, 6252 W. 104th Ave.; 303-469-5441. Admission is $7.95 for adults, $5.95 for seniors age 65 and older, $4.95 for kids ages 2 to 12. Saturday. Celebrate all things astronomy at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The museum’s Astronomy Day marks 400 years since Galileo started watching the skies with his telescopes. Visit the Space Odyssey exhibit for special lectures and presentations about space, and even peek through a solar telescope at the sun. Programs will go on throughout the day. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Denver Museum of Nature and Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd.; 303-322-7009. Museum admission is $11 for adults, $6 for juniors ages 3 to 18, students with ID and seniors age 65 and older.
Sunday. It’s a harvest time hoedown at the Schweiger Ranch in Lone Tree. Visitors can get a sneak peek at the historic ranch’s restoration and have some fall fun at the same time. Pick out a pumpkin and test your skills at a carving competition, then take a break on a hayride or listen to a storyteller. There’s also pony rides, roasted marshmallows, scarecrow-making and more. Young horse lovers can arrive early, at 1 p.m., to help get the horses ready for the hayrides. 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Schweiger Ranch, 10822 Valley Highway, Lone Tree.
