Featured Blogger: Chris Bird of Mama Birds Blog

As a part of Mama Tech Talk, we would like to share about some wonderful fellow bloggers. Our first featured blogger is Chris Bird of Mama Birds Blog.

What is the name of your blog? How did you choose this name?
MamaBirdsBlog. My friends started calling me “Mama Bird” when I was pregnant, because my last name is Bird, and the name has just stuck. Didn’t really have to think about the name after that!

How did you get started blogging?
I like to write and have been journaling for my daughter, Reagan since she turned one and my husband was diagnosed with cancer. This turning point in our lives finally prompted me to start recording all the most memorable moments of her life as an alternative to the “baby book” I never started. While my husband recovered from treatment and I had to return to work, I decided to make a career shift from graphic design to social media marketing after it was suggested to me by my career/life coach. Starting a blog became part of that shift and has served as a creative and emotional outlet for my own thoughts and experiences while going through this challenging role reversal in addition to the personal journal I keep for my daughter. I decided it would also be a good way to share my experiences with others who might be going through similar circumstances in their lives for the same or different reasons.

What platform do you use? (I.e. Blogger, WordPress, etc.)
WordPress.com, though I will eventually be moving it to WordPress.org for more robust options.

What do you wish you had known when you started?
If I had known more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, I would’ve started with the latter to begin with! While a WordPress.com blog is hosted for free, you can’t add javascript which is necessary for many of the blog widgets you’ll eventually want to add to your blog. It also has limited template options that make expanding your blog more difficult.

What blogs do you most admire?
My must reads: dooce (of course), amalah, momtrolfreak, crazybloggincanuck and techtalkformoms!

What is your best tip for moms who are new to social media?
If it’s something you want to do, JUST DO IT. Don’t get analysis paralysis. You don’t have to know it all and do it all, just take one step at a time. Start with a simple blog, a Facebook or Twitter account and grow as you’re ready to grow! It isn’t a race; it’s a journey! Have fun with it or it isn’t worth doing!
