Mama Drama: Potty Training On The Go
September 3, 2010 – 7:00 am | No Comment

Dear Mama Drama:
My two year old is potty training and has moved into wearing “big girl panties.” I am freaked out about taking her out of the house because I’m afraid she’ll have an accident and will become too discouraged. How can I take her out and help her to be successful?

Playing and Picting–Win a Free Workshop!

Playing and Picting–Win a Free Workshop!

Every time I get together with friends, it ends up being a photo shoot. Case in point: a simple jaunt to the pool for the first “real” day of summer that turns into 300 photos that I whittle down to 30 faves… [Speaking of. What's up, June? Where is the sun, anyways?!?]

Which got me thinking.

I attend conferences.

I attend playdates.

I take photos.

I like to talk about taking photos.

Why not bring all that together in one easy, fun, afternoon?

Violá!

PhotoPlayDate was born. Who knows where it will go (hopefully other cities based on the enthusiastic support already). But, for now, I am feverishly working on having the first get-together in Denver on July 12th. Final details are being ironed out. Feverishly. It will be cheap, just enough to cover costs. It will be fun. Casual. Small. A group of parents and their kids interested in honing photo skills while enjoying their children. Collaborative. NOT about me yammering on. OK. There will be a bit of me yammering. I’m a yammerer. But it’s really all about sharing tricks and tips and ideas in that Colorado afternoon golden sun.

If we ever get sun in Colorado again, that is.

And since I love my Mile High Mamas so much, I would like to give away one slot in the workshop to you for free. All you have to do is comment here on this post from now until Sunday, June 14th at 12 midnight. One comment per person. Tell me why you would like to be part of the workshop. I will pick the best answer, totally at my digression, bribes welcome (KIDDING! – unless you can get the sun back, that is), and we’ll announce the winner here next week.

Make ‘em good, friends.

If I were in the Denver area, I would join you for sure. Hopefully it will make to Detroit

  • Kris says:

I would attend this either way. Fairly new to Denver, would love to meet fellow mothers and photographers in an informal setting. Thanks for putting this together. aka benoyroma.

Aimee, this is a great idea! I’d love to participate, but I don’t have a fancy-schmancy camera. I mean, I LOVE my Canon PowerShot Digital Elph camera: http://thecasualperfectionist.com/2007/12/a-new-camera/ …don’t get me wrong!

I’d love to learn some tips and tricks to taking better photos!

Of course I would love to come to your play date! My oldest son age nine has taken a keen interest in photography lately and is considering starting a portfolio so he can apply to attend the Denver School of the Arts. This would be a wonderful opportunity for him to learn and for me to help him remember what he has learned! Oh! I hope we win!!

Are you kidding?! I’ve been foaming at the mouth ever since I heard about your PhotoPlayDates through @crazycanucklog! I told another Mommy friend who is moving next week and she actually considered sending her husband on without her just to be part of it. She’s seriously interested should you ever start something in Philadelphia!

As for me, I’ve been in mourning ever since the professional camera I bought off a wedding photographer was stolen out of my brother’s house one Summer day in LA while I was visiting. We found the entire house robbed upon returning from the beach. That was 20 years ago.

I loved that camera and have never completely gotten over it being taken from me along with the photos of my family still in it. They got all my lenses too. It had been quite a hefty investment for me as a college student. I had just finished taking a photography class as a Fine Arts elective and really thought this may be my calling as I finessed my skills inside and out of the darkroom with simple black & white film. Maybe I’d become a photo journalist?

As strange as it may sound, I could no more replace my camera than someone who had just lost a beloved pet could replace their Fido. Besides, I was a STRUGGLING college student. I never took another photography class, bought an instamatic and stuck with that through to the digital age.

There’s nothing like having a baby to stir up the photographer in you once again. Since having my baby, 2 years ago, I have definitely come out of my mourning. I have a new baby now to replace the electronic one and I’ve been waiting for an excuse to tell my husband why I need a new fancy-schmancy camera when we just bought a new pocket digital one for Christmas. There is just no way to seize upon the emotion and nuance of every fleeting childhood moment with even the best pocket digital the way a professional lens can.

So, PICK ME and you give me the excuse I need to buy that camera and rebirth the passion I once had for the fine art of photography! And… my kid needs more play dates. :-)

I NEED some help. I am the same way… one afternoon… 150 kazillion photos.

One favorite and 20 ones that I fiddle with using Picasa and perhaps Photobucket.

I’m a mess.. I spend all night fiddling with photos.

I’d love to meet more people like me.. I CAN NOT be the only one :)

  • Holly Wolsey says:

I heart children and I heart photography … this sounds like a great fit for me. Pick me! Pick me! Pretty please with sugar on top? And a cherry??

  • Rachel says:

    Four reasons to pick me:

    1) I’m an excellent photographer.

    2) My kids are angels, no one would even notice their presence.

    3) I could impart my vast knowledge of photography tricks to all in attendance.

    4) I am pretty much awesome company.

(Okay so the first three are complete lies. But I do like to have fun and I do love sunny Colorado afternoons and I do want to learn more about taking good photos.)

I’m typing one-handed b/c I sliced my hand w/ a bread knife last week…so while this very well should be witty and wonderful, I’m reduced to a right hand which is equally being consumed by this keyboard and the nearly as important mojito alongside it. Did I mention this is being typed (pecked) one-handed? Why me, huh? Let’s see, I’m a teacher (kindergarten), I could share these skills with 5 year olds (wouldn’t that be awesome?) I have a curly-haired two year old that is so freakin’ cute I want to eat her (that really should be captured in a photo shoot, don’t you think?) and next summer we are traveling to Ethiopia to adopt our 2nd child and I want, no, I NEED photos to document the beginning of her life. She deserves that.

  • Holly says:

I would love to learn some more about photography from you and get the kids together for a playdate. I am enjoying this weather but really do miss the usual Colorado sun. Pick me and you definitely won’t be dissapointed.

  • summer says:

do you ever come to los angeles? if so, i’d love to participate in this playdate, and i have 10 other moms who would love to partake as well!

  • Just wanted to let you all know that the winner is….
    MAMA BIRD.

Anyone who is willing to write a dissertation on why she needs to come to this workshop deserves to attend.

But you all are AWESOME, and I hope you can make it on July 12th!

Here is the Eventbrite link to get tickets!

Thanks again for all your wonderful entries!
