One Book, One Denver to hold various free events; what are your favorite children’s books?
I am a huge advocate of reading. One of my earliest memories is snuggling up in my yellow canopied bed, pinning my little brother down, and reading Alice in Wonderland to him for hours.
Upon further reflection, he may not share the same fond memories.
I started attending storytime at the library when my daughter was six months old. It was initially more of a lifeline to get out of the house and socialize with other moms but it soon became part of our weekly routine.
That’s why I was thrilled to learn that the Denver Preschool Program (DPP), in partnership with the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs and the support of Kaplan Early Learning Company, have presented the first ever preschool-aged book selection in cooperation with the ongoing One Book, One Denver program.
Basically, this new initiative aims to inspire parents, grandparents and other caregivers across the Denver community to take an active role in their children’s academic success by reading together. To help families foster a love of reading early in a child’s life, several community reading events will be held for the inaugural selection A Chair For My Mother by Vera B. Williams. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper was one of many on the committee that chose this year’s Preschool One Book, One Denver book, which is a Caldecott Honor book.
For additional information and a calendar of events on Preschool One Book, One Denver that includes a meet-up with the author Vera Williams, please visit their Web site.
What were some of your favorite books as a child? What books have your children enjoyed throughout the years?

Alice in Wonderland was definitely one of my favorites as was anything Dr. Seuss.
P.S. As I got older, I really loved the Encyclopedia Brown books. Basically, they had multiple endings and you could choose the one you wanted. I don’t know if they’re still around!
One of my faves as a little kid was “Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like.” The Asian-themed art is beautiful. My little girl’s current favorite is Seuss’ “Hop on Pop.” She cries out “noo, Pat, noooo” when Pat almost sits on the cactus, and it warms my heart every time.
I love the idea of this program! In a previous life, I helped get books into children’s hands who may have not had the opportunity. Hat’s off to DPP for implementing this!
P.S. My kids LOVE Sandra Boynton’s books, especially BARNYARD DANCE.
THE GIVING TREE….I read it til the book fell apart.
My son loves Richard Scarry books, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Pigs over Colorado, Pigs over Denver, and Pigs over Boulder!
Fancy Nancy is my daughters fav, The Pout Pout Fish is my son’s. I personally love I’m gonna to like me by Jamie Lee Curtis
Anything by Lane Smith cracks me up. Try The Hocky Family. Hilarious dry humor for mommy’s entertainment.
