The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Introducing the Newest Member of Our Family

Guess what the Greeblemonkeys got for Christmas???

Technically his full name is “Poe Hamster.” Poe as in Edgar Allan. Because Bryan loves Edgar Allan Poe as a writer and Poe was from Baltimore (where we grew up) and also Poe the dog was born in October – so it was a slightly creepy name we could both live with as an alternative to Bryan’s first choice for a name: “Zombie.”

And Hamster? Um. Declan kinda insisted on it. I have NO IDEA where he gets his penchant for weird names.

Anyway, Poe is a Bernese Mountain Dog with 1/8th Great Pyrenees mixed in to help him live longer. So, yes, that means he is gonna be HUGE. At 10 weeks, we think he is already about 12 pounds. But the good news is, Berners are especially lazy for giant breed dogs. Perfect for lazy owners like us.

So far, so good. The first night was rough… but he’s already doing pretty well at getting outside for bathroom business and clearly loves Bryan to death. Which is good because that is who is going to take him for walks and clean up his poop.

What tips do you have for bringing a new puppy into your home?

My tip, Hire a trainer, even if you don’t think you need one! We used an in home trainer with our first and second after flunking out of obediance school. (Franz Pro Dog Training) and the results were amazing!!!! The dogs (two beagles, now just 1 due to age) were so well mannered we could leave food out and they wouldn’t touch it, they were trained to stay on the main level of the new house so as to not wreak havoc with the new baby on the way etc. THat is my advice.

I’m so jealous. I love Bernese Mountain Dogs! He is suck a cutie! Have fun with him. Puppy school is a good tip, it will teach him the basics. Nice that the breed is laid back. We had a Weimeraner who was a bundle of energy. I couldn’t keep up!

We are taking puppy classes and so far he is responding well! But I will definitely keep that in mind!!!

He sure is cute – and I’m not much of a pet person! I have four kids so a pet would put me over the top. That said, sorry but no tips to offfer.
