The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Twilight and Kiss Me, Creep Musings

Submitted by on December 16, 2008 – 12:00 amNo Comment

A few weeks ago, my best friend asked me to go to see Twilight with her. I went, even though I really knew nothing about the series, because… what the heck. It was fun – and a nice girls afternoon away from life.

But then OF COURSE I was required to read all the books.

And I have to admit, they are as addicting as they are silly. So OF COURSE I keep on reading. And OF COURSE I will see the new movies as they come out. And um, OF COURSE Rob Pattinson is hot. How old is that kid anyway? Am I allowed to say that?

May I remind you I am 38 years old?

But the funnier thing is, a few months ago I was visiting my mother in Maryland – you know, my mother who keeps every single scrap of every single EVERYTHING, and I came across all the romance novels I read when I was a kid (YES. Every. single. one). Torn, tattered, sad excuses for books – both in the physical and emotional senses of the word.

How do I know? Because I brought them home and reread EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

OH YES I DID.

Are you a Twilight fan? What were some of your favorite books as a teenager?

I don’t think I read that one! Can I borrow it? Ha Ha! I have read and re-read many of my childhood books some of which are a bit bizarre – my mom kept most of mine and my brothers too. I am 35 and just about to embark on the Twilight Journey…I have had the books in my Kindle for months but am waiting for January to read them because I do NOT need anything else keeping me up late at night right now.

  • I will soon be returning home to the land of my youth and will undoubtedly read a few of my favorites. I not only loved “Sweet Dreams” but the “First Love From Silhouette.” Just call us sentimental fools….

I’m glad you posted about this before I did.

My post would have been very tortured and angst-laden.

If I had read this on my own, it would just be all about great reading fun. But I started reading them with my eleven-year-old daughter and, as such, have become a reluctant fan…. It’s just a little too….. damsel in distress for me. I just need to get over myself because I DO enjoy them when I take its influence on my daughter out of the picture.

    But, yeah, Rob Pattinson…. HOT!!

  • Katherine says:

Oh I love Twilight. My sister in law lent me hers cause she knows I like to read and then it began. I read all 4 books in 2 weeks. And since our birthdays were right around the movie release I even got her as a gag gift, a TEAM EDWARD button. I know…totally dorky.
Terra–How do you like the kindle? I have been thinking about getting one, but haven’t heard anything except Oprah’s endorsement of it.

I held out on the Twilight series for the longest time, finally reading the first book around Thanksgiving. Now I seriously cannot put the books down. Just started the last one and I am so sad that it’s almost over! Cannot wait to see the movie. Nice to know there’s a fellow Twilight-er (over 30) out there. :)

I’m reading book 3 of the Twilight series right now and am totally loving it! I haven’t seen the movie yet but will…hopefully before the 2nd one comes out!

When I was younger though? I was hooked on Sweet Valley High books, VC Andrews books (Flowers in the Attic, etc.) and Judy Blume.

I was never a sweet valley high girl, but I loved all the Lois Duncan books (esp A gift of Magic, although more famous for I know what you did last summer)
and Lois Lowry (the Giver) (what’s with the name Lois?), and of course, Madeline L’Engle.

So, anything with a fantasy/magic/SciFi twist. Still lots of teen angsty stuff, but ooo, you can read minds too! :D

  • MindyMom says:

Confession: I was a fan of the “Sweet Valley High” series…it had the teen angst/young love stuff we all go through at some point.

  • Melissa D says:

An English teacher got us into Stephen King novels and I devoured them all through high school (mind you, it was the mid-80′s). Hmmm.. that explains A LOT! LOL..

I am a Twilight fan. I was/am embarrassed to say so, but here I am, in print admitting it.

What makes it worse…when I was younger, I loved the vampire books by Ann Rice…theme? YIKES!

Otherwise, I read Dean Koontz books. Apparently I need to escape – often.

  • mothergoosemouse says:

Oh mah gah, I have all of my old books from childhood. They’re on Tacy’s and CJ’s bookshelves. Still love them.

Favorites include the Anastasia books (duh) by Lois Lowry, the All of a Kind Family series by Sydney Taylor, Harriet the Spy and The Long Secret and Sport, and all books by Ellen Conford (Dear Lovey Hart, I Am Desperate, etc.) and Paula Danziger (Cat Ate My Gymsuit, etc.).

Cannot read Twilight. Cannot read Harry Potter. Cannot read anything that everyone else is absolutely raving over.
