The Preemptive Haircut Discussion
As we sat in swimming lessons today, the mother of a friend of Declan’s leaned over and whispered in my ear, “Did you notice Asher’s hair?” I honestly hadn’t, but on closer inspection, it appears that he and a pair of scissors had had an argument. And the scissors won. Asher recently had had a fairly short haircut, so it really took a trained eye to see the gaping hole. But there definitely *was* a gaping hole. Apparently Asher became bored in class he decided RIGHT THEN was the time to get creative. With his hair.
Asher’s parents had discussed it with him at length, just once, and decided to not bring it up again. That if he gets bored again, they were sure his teacher had *plenty* of things to occupy his time. That since they had recently paid for a haircut, he would have to live with the consequences of his beautician-for-a-day antics, and they would not go back and spend more money to fix the issue. But also that, kids will be kids, hair grows, he learned his lesson, so be it – and most importantly, to repeatedly discuss it would intrigue Asher’s very strong-willed and long-haired younger sister.
So we whispered about it quickly in the echoey chamber of the swimming hall and quickly shut up when the boys came near.
But my friend also mentioned that several other parents of 6-7 year olds she knew had pulled similar pranks. That apparently this is “THE AGE” for self-haircut-mutilation.
Oh dear.
So, on the way home? Guess what WAS the topic of conversation in our vehicle?
Have your children ever gotten “creative” with the scissors?

You don’t exactly instill confidence. I thought we were past the haircutting phase with my daughter. Though I hope she is too vain to ever make the attempt.
See, this is why I get on Mile High Mamas so much. I want to know about the things to look out for before we get to that age. And then lock up the scissors.
OMG, Mallory did a number on her hair this spring. She had long hair, down past her shoulders, and one morning decided it was bothering her, so she found some scissors and just went to town on it. Horrible. And she’s 5.
Here’s the blog post where I go on and on about it: She’s going to have a mullet. Here’s the post that shows her darling new (very short) haircut. And I’d like to add, it’s been 7 months now, and her hair is just NOW starting to look “not short.”
At about age 5 DD “trimmed” her bangs one day. Clear up to the scalp.
Growing it out was soooooo pretty. Having hair stick straight out just adds another dimension, like a 4th. And growing out hardly took any time at all! What’s 2 years in the span of a lifetime?
There are no more scissors in the house.
Duly noted. Scissors be gone..
BTW.. Amber.. I tried to give myself a bang-cut when I was THIRTEEN. “Not pretty” is a nice way of putting it..

My daughter, who is 6 now, has always been a major “cutter”–her clothes, her sister’s clothes, her sister’s hair (they both got in trouble for that one–the older one for letting her sister do it!), her curtains. But, she has yet to cut her own hair.
I think, along with Amber, that vanity may be saving her hair.
Not yet – we only shave my sons head once a month or so. I however, had at least one where I gave myself bangs at age… first grade I think. And then my bff helped me “fix” them. heh-heh
Oh no!! Not yet…but I have wondered when “that age” would be. Now I know! HOPEFULLY we have a few years to go before Claire tries to be her own aesthetician…

When my older son was about 7 maybe, it was back when Michael Jordan was at his peak. He was a huge Jordan fan. All the kids were getting their favorite NBA players number shaved onto the back of their heads. My son, decided he was going to shave Jordan’s # onto his head all by himself! It didn’t quite go as expected and he ended up with a huge bald spot on the side of his head! It looked ridiculous but luckily with boys, you can cut their hair really short to cover it up!
um- just today! Friar Finn is now his name. Ugh!
OMG, yes. It started with her own hair when she was five. Now it is mainly the dolls that she no longer plays with. And just last week, she has experimented with a razor. Ouch!
