The OTHER Catherines

Submitted by Catherine on September 18, 2008 – 12:00 am6 Comments

Much to my disappointment, I was unable to make the recent Mommy Blogger meet-up thanks to rampant illness in my home. I was very much looking forward to meeting the real-life personalities behind the blogs. Although, this always makes me wonder about my own personality and blog. A co-worker recently ask me about my “online persona.” He wanted to know how much of Blogger Catherine is really ME and how much of it is My Evil Twin. I think what he actually wanted to know was: Do I have the Sybil Syndrome? Because I’m obviously a different person when you meet me.

Or…. am I? The answer depends totally on YOU. I decided to come up with five ways in which I AM or am NOT my blog persona according to whom you ask.

1) My husband will tell you, “YES. Blogger Catherine is a fair representation of Real Life Catherine. Except that she whines a lot more in person. Kind of nasally. And you REAAALLLY need to avoid her for a week out of every month. Unless you don’t mind being loathed for your boorish behavior and lack of sensitivity. Plus, Blogger Catherine takes three hours to come up with a cohesive post. Therefore, Real Life Catherine is a lot like dead skin cells. She’s kind of all over the place.”

2) My sisters might say, “YES, this is Catherine. But tick her off in real life and she bares her teeth like a hellcat. She hisses and foams at the mouth! She is one head twist away from needing an exorcism!! Otherwise she’s as sweet and pretty as a newborn kitty. Which, by the way, is ALWAYS. Really and truly.”

3) My dear friend Laurie would say, “Blogger Catherine is very, very careful and discreet compared to Real Life Catherine.” And because Laurie is couth personified and such a good friend, my girl would leave it at that.

4) The friend and co-worker who wanted to know more about this online persona I’ve got goin’ on… he would probably say, “I still don’t believe this is the same person I eat lunch with every other Thursday. The Catherine I know doesn’t use words like SNARK and MEME. She doesn’t try so hard to be cute. And she NEVER insinuates that she’s in love with Obama! Is it just me or does Blogger Catherine give off an aura of “I heart Obama?!”

5) The doctors who live across the street would say, “What did you say her name was… Catherine? That gal with the lights on at all hours of the night?? Tell What’s Her Face to get off the computer already.”

So what about you? Are you a different person online? More free? More discreet? Snarkier?

I would say I am pretty much the same in person as I am on my blog. Except much louder. :-)

  • Amber says:

But my husband would say that everything I wrote on my blog about him? ALL LIES! So, I guess that makes me a liar both online and in person. :-)

  • Lori says:

    LOL!

    I am much nicer online.

My kids would say IRL I speak in ALL CAPS, especially when they BREATHE ON EACH OTHER in the CAR or TAKE THREE HOURS TO EMPTY THE TRASH TOGETHER and MAKE A BIG MESS WHILE DOING SO!

I really am an introvert and that is why I connect so well online. I don’t feel inhibited and can finally be myself!

  • Carol says:

I’m much more careful online and probably a lot sweeter. My hubby will say that I can be pretty evil. I say he was asking for it! ;)

I’m very cognizant of what I say about other people and how it could be perceived. I try not to talk about my family and in-laws and work. Unless of course there is praise for one of the above.

    Great question!

Pretty much what you read is what you get. I do edit myself, though.

I do my best to keep things light and fluffy on my blog, but sometimes it doesn’t always turn out that way.
