What supplements do you give your children (if at all?)
July 29, 2010 – 12:00 am | 3 Comments

When my son was 4, I tried giving him nutritional supplements to make up for his appalling diet. I mixed fish oil into his orange juice. I let him eat candylike gummy multivitamins. And I stirred a chocolate powder containing 31 fruit and vegetable extracts into his milk.
It eased my worries, but experts disagree on [...]

Biggest Loser Boot Camp Week 9 Weigh-in

Submitted by Amber Johnson on June 6, 2008 – 12:00 am22 Comments

biggestloser 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8During my two-week break from Front Range Adventure Boot Camp, some have asked if I hit a plateau because I did not lose weight for the first time since I began.

Well, if a plateau involves cookies, BBQs and treats at my daughter’s birthday party then the answer is a resounding “Yes!”

It is not like I intended to fall off the wagon. But like a relapsing alcoholic, sometimes you just don’t want to resist the taste of that sweet, sweet nectar. Don’t get me wrong. Most of the time, my intentions were noteworthy. I convinced my daughter we should opt out of the traditional birthday cake and have a sand cake that is served out of a bucket for her beach party. She loved it!

And unfortunately, so did I. I tried to be good, really I did. The only ingredients were vanilla pudding, cream cheese and Nilla cookies so I went fat-free/reduced fat on them all. Commendable, right?

Sure, except it tasted like crap so I dumped a ton of powdered sugar in to make it edible.

Guess what: when you add a year’s allotment of powdered sugar it is no longer low-fat.

And then there was the taste test. Next month, I will be reviewing and offering a giveaway for Zebra Mix, fun step-by-step baking kits for children. On Monday, we received kits to make organic chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes and brownies and my daughter was ecstatic to try them out. And evidently so was I because cookie dough is my vice in life.

To repent from my indulgence, I decided to skip dinner. My husband Jamie asked me,

“Aren’t you eating dinner?”

“Naw, I had some stuff earlier and am not hungry.”

“You ate some of Hadley’s cookies, didn’t you?”

“Curse you for knowing me so well.”

And so this [food] junkie is back on the wagon. What tips do you have for getting motivated once you have strayed?

My life is all about falling off the wagon. Am still trying to figure out how to get back on. Carry on, Amber!

  • Kate says:

I swear I just can’t get into the groove of my “healthy-diet” plan. I’ve lost 6 lbs in 2 weeks but I’m back on the ice cream again. UGH!!! That dump cake sounds so good!

  • SAAM says:

A special pole was put up for the movie at the back of the school and was taken down soon after the movie was made!

I lost 10 pounds in my first week of my ‘dieting’ and haven’t lost any more in 2 months. But my motivation is looking at myself in the mirror. UGH!! Keep up the good work, even with the rare cookie eating!!!

  • Dana says:

You had me at Cookies. Cookies are my weakness.

Yeah…powdered sugar…it’s the devil in disguise!

  • Suzanne Bastien says:

Well.. the wagon is there to fall off, as long as you don’t give up!

Ok, so I took your advice and started my weight loss.

    My blog site is http://crunchygreenmom.blogspot.com

I am doing this every Friday as well! I just started on Monday so I’ll update weight loss next Friday.

    Thanks for the motivation

I guess the answer is always that you forgive yourself and go on.
You accept the fact that your kids’ treats will be in your life, and try to plan ahead for avoidance strategies and make trade offs: if you lick the bowl, you then don’t get a cookie later, that kind of thing. If you fill your house with the scent of warm brownies, try to fill your nose with something else – chew a strong minty gum.
And of course, there’s always giving your kids the healthiest options available, so when you do snack with them, it ain’t that bad!
A friend of mine said that when she started putting big, beautiful fruit out in a bowl, her kids asked for it more, and she craved it more. Who craves an orange? Evidently she does, now. :)

  • Amber says:

To crave fruit? I long for the day!

  • Guinevere Meadow says:

there’s no magic to it, unfortuantely, you’ve just got to start again. Each day wake up and tell yourself that you’re going to make good choices TODAY. It’s much easier when you only think of it one day at a time.

Speaking of which, it’s time for me to go get some exercise.

  • Eve says:

You have done so great with wt loss and muscle toning. Good for you for working so hard. The only way you can make low-fat work in a recipe if only 1 or 2 things have it. ROFL about everything low-fat…..as soon as I read that I KNEW you’d be adding sugar! Cute pics of bday party and good to hear it was a bit more normal=enjoyable (not overly crowded). You’ll lose more wt when you get back into it. Sounds like you just needed a short break. I guess my opinion is don’t get too zealous about anything except patisseries!!!!

  • Eve says:

OT, I think you should research dry drowning and put something about it on MHM.

  • Melissa says:

I have no idea. I like to watch the Biggest Loser when it’s on… and I try to remind myself not to get to the point where I have to go on TV to lose weight… :)

  • A mom in the burbs says:

    Cookies….pastries…..oh yeah, baby!

Well, I have been *thinking* really hard about exercising and finally have a plan in place (you would NOT believe how complicted it can be for a mama to try to work out–oh wait, yep, you all can! :)…

Everyday is a new day! AND I am sick of trying to dress around my fat tummy! Ugh!

  • chel says:

I have no motivation. I thought going to Mexico for a week and then to Lake Powell for a week and then to Hawaii for a week would be motivating. Nope. I’m lame. And now I hate that I was lame because we leave soon and I am dreading wearing a swimsuit.

  • Richelle F says:

Just don’t give up! At least you didn’t gain any, right?

  • smartmama says:

In our family – it is like the frog and toad story about the cookies- and no will power- unfortunatly i am like Toad when the cookies are gone its time to bake a cake!

  • Lizzy says:

Just ask yourself, “Do you like to loose?” Me, I don’t mind loosing so much, but I get the feeling you aren’t one for failure. I’m sure that will motivate you enough to get back in that wagon.

I’ll be thinking of you as I eat my pumpkin cake. =)

  • diana/sunshine says:

no good advice since i’m right there with you.

i think i may have something tho… while shopping with my daughter over the last 2 days, i kept telling myself… “you need to lose weight.” “you need to exercise more.” “i’m gonna get in better shape!” and i really feel committed.

so what if i go shopping each and every day to keep myself committed and motivated? do you think that would work? might be worth a try.

Press on – and give yourself something to look forward to – maybe another full day of really good cheating soon. ;)

A great hike with my kids yesterday – and ice cream sundaes today… You win some, you lose some I guess. I’m still trying to get back in my pre-pregnancy clothes and my baby is nearly 5 months old. So, thanks for your example – it’s really time for me to get motivated!

  • yvonne says:

That’s a tough question. I’m always looking for ways to stay motivated–it’s so easy to fall off the wagon. Just keep remembering how well you’ve done.

  • Jody says:

Motivation is a tricky thing! I can always motivate myself for the short-term (much like a sprinter, I guess) – but as far as those long-haul enduro races…I always fall off course! So lately, I’ve been giving myself only short-term goals – and resetting them once I reach the goal.

My older two girls love to cook….and they do cook…a lot…..and it always involves cake, cookies, or brownies.

What can I do? I have to be polite and sample the goodies and comment on how good they are or I would crush their feelings. I’m just trying to be a good mom here. :)
