“What does that say?”
These are questions I get constantly, every day from my four year old. She’s been asking these questions for years.
She comes by this honestly. I have …

Biggest Loser Boot Camp Week 7 Weigh-in (as Satan is identified)

Submitted by Amber Johnson on May 16, 2008 – 12:00 am27 Comments

biggestloser 1 2 3 4 5 6I tried an experiment and allowed myself an indulgence last week.

Then again, to consider it an experiment perhaps I need to garner inspiration from my science fair days and write a solid hypothesis and carry out a detailed plan of action.

I suspect my spur-of-the-moment hypothesis, “Those ice cream sundaes and bacon asiago bread look tasty so I will eat them” does not really count.

This must be why I was a science-fair failure.

I know of many diets that give you a free day or free meal so I decided to apply this to my Mother’s Day dinner and lo, I did eat. After all, we were celebrating my motherhood with carbs and ice cream. How could I pass that up?

Did it work? My weekly weight loss is: 2.5 pounds, making my Week 7 weight loss total 18.5 pounds. One could conclude the experiment worked, though I may have possibly lost an additional 4 pounds had I not taken that extra scoop of chocolate fudge. Or two.

At this point in my journey, every day has a struggle of some kind. But after a month and a half of participating in The Front Range Adventure Boot Camp, I am learning what my body needs. That it is not about deprivation but moderation, an important life lesson for maintaining this lifestyle.

Every week, a few of us meet at someone’s house for a healthy dinner as inspirational life coach Robyn guides us on our path. And every week, I am touched in some way and leave feeling infallible, like no temptation is too great.

Until a certain someone’s husband returns home with the kids from Grandma’s with a plate of freshly-baked brownies moments after the meeting has been adjourned.

And then you realize that the source of the enticements, the one who is sent to lure you out of that paradisiacal garden? Some call him Satan.

Or Jamie.

Have you ever allowed yourself a free day or free meal when watching your weight? Has it worked for you?

Wow, Amber. 18.5 pounds WITH ice cream??

The added support you get from the dinners must make a huge difference in terms of inspiration…that it’s not just an exercise class.

You really ARE inspiring, I look forward to these reports every week.

    Heidi

  • SAAM says:

I have my set calories for the day and I always try to vary this within about 200-300 calories. I find this works better than the same old thing every day. It shakes the body up a bit. And the ice cream that I occasionly eat doesn’t hurt so long as it is occasionly

  • Jdude says:

Oh, you are too good. And I’m with Satan.

  • Amber says:

Thanks, ladies (even if you are with Satan).
And as for looking forward to my weigh-in every week, at least someone is. I know I don’t. :-)

  • Suzanne Bastien says:

It’s fun to read. I plan on starting next week as well, so I’ll probably weigh myself tonight and go from there!!

  • cheryl says:

Absolutley! You have to allow yourself a few indlugences, or your body will go crazy. Along with your mind.

When I allow myself to eat at least one meal of “whatever I want”, or have that lucscious cheesecake once a week, my tendency to binge goes way, way, way down. Because if I deprive myself of every single thing I crave and desire, I will finally explode and binge like crazy. Then cry, then gain weight, then cry some more and the vicious cycle continues.

At the same time (because this comment is, apparantly, not long enough), I have found that the longer I’m eating better, my cravings change, and eating the “good stuff” begins to lose it’s appeal and flavor. So, it’s kind of a win-win to allow myself those few indulgences, you know?

  • cheryl says:

    And, obviously, I can’t spell. :(

  • Melissa says:

Congrats on the weightloss! Unfortunately, every day is a cheat day for me right now. I have not taken the steps to be a really healthy eater… but, one of my good friends has a cheat day each week. She has said that over time she really hasn’t craved the sugars and fats like she used to and her cheat days aren’t really that bad any more. Before she had a cheat day though, she felt deprived and frustrated… keep up the good work!!

  • Richelle F says:

I’m amazed you keep losing multiple pounds each week, even with some indulgences. Great job!

  • Jane B says:

Hi Amber, When I was teaching YW we had a nutrionist come and talk to the girls, she told them the best life style is 20/80. 20% of the time you eat what you want and the other 80% you eat the way you should. Sounds reasonable…maybe I should try it. JB

  • Adventures In Babywearing says:

Um sorry- you lost me at bacon asiago bread. Where can I get that??

  • chel says:

I do allow a free day… but… the problem with me is that one free day ends up to be two or three or four…. Once I indulge… it’s over for me! Hopefully I’ll learn that a free meal once a week is fine, but that’s ALL! Once I “cheat,” I’m all about cheating!!!

    Great job!

  • Amber says:

Yeah, previous to this, my life was allll about free days. :-)

  • Guinevere Meadow says:

I’m taking a super long time to take weight off, but I’m glad because it’s STAYING off, and little by little I’m making small changes that in the end, will make me healthier.

If I indulge myself at one meal, I try to make sure and “be good” for the next one. I’m also discovering the joys of fruits and vegetables. For example, eating an orange, for some reason, gives me the same pick-me-up as a cup of coffee or soda, but with WAY more nutritional value.

  • Amber says:

Steph – Super Target has that bread and it was tasty. :-)

  • Shannon (Cole Mine) says:

I do allow myself free days…I pick one day every week (usually turns out to be a weekend day since this is when we often go out) to “cheat”. This way, I have something to look forward to and know I can have special treats if I’ve been craving them. Holidays don’t count – they are always special and I eat what I want on these days. Congrats on all your success!

  • Loralee says:

I think that not totally depriving yourself is really important when you are doing any kind of weight management plan. Just get back on the wagon and don’t use it as an excuse for further pigging out.

  • Tiff says:

Wow! 18 pounds and 7 weeks! That’s amazing. :) Have you noticed a difference?

    http://www.childplay.wordpress.com

  • Amber says:

I have definitely noticed a difference though I don’t know if any others have seen a difference. Except Robyn. She commented today that my workout clothes are practically falling off me. That is a good thing. :-)

  • Jenn says:

Never been on a diet, so I can’t really say, in regards to the free day. I do think it’s good for you to have indulgences though, so I like the idea of it. Good for you for attempting something so challenging.

    jenn

  • MommyTime says:

I think the occasional indulgences are really important. I have a calorie range that I aim for, and at the end of the day, if I still have some calories left at the low end of the range, I’ll have a little handful of chocolate chips or something else sweet and small. Occasionally, like invited to a friend’s house for dinner, I’ll be careful of what I eat that day, but then I’ll have the wine, and the bread, and the dessert at dinner — because it’s fun and social (and rude not to eat what someone’s cooked, right?). As long as the “cheats” are far from the norm, I think it’s healthy. Otherwise, it becomes a lifestyle you can’t maintain. And lifestyle change is the only way really to keep off the weight.

    CONGRATULATIONS on the 18 pounds!

  • Erin says:

So where are the lookin skinny pics? :)

  • Leslie says:

I don’t think of them as indulgences…I think of them as moments of happiness. I think you have to have some of those or you just can’t possibly “stick” to a “diet”. Well…I’m off to make some brownies…that sounded so good! :)

  • yvonne says:

You are so right about it all having to do with moderation. But sometimes when I indulge I have to deprive ; )

Congratulations–I am so impressed at how well you are doing.

  • Paige says:

18 pounds!? You are rockin this Boot Camp thing! Congratulations!

And even on a diet you still need some treats.

  • Terri says:

I need to lose 20 lbs!!
