Each month, Mile High Mamas will feature a different mama blogger from our blogroll (our listing of Colorado’s hottest mom blogs). We have chosen hilarious Sarah from Imaginary Binky for our first spotlight. Not only is she juggling a baby and a comedian husband but she also set the insane goal to blog every single day in 2008. Let’s check in to see how she is doing….

1) Where on earth did you come up with the blog name “Imaginary Binky?”

My son Amos is a great sleeper. I’m jealous of how well that boy can sleep. When he’s slumbering, off and on his mouth will move as if he is sucking on an imaginary nipple or binky, which I suppose is a comforting thing for him. I look at my writing and my blog as a comforting thing for me, so Imaginary Binky is my own pacifier to calm the savage beast. I liked the name so much that I came up with the tag line: “Imaginary Binky – Suck on This.� It’s sassy and saucy, just the way I like it.

2) Why did you set the goal to blog every single day in 2008?

I’d like to say it was because I want to continue developing my voice as a writer and to set a routine for daily writing, which is true. However, I believe the initial reason I decided to blog every day this year is out of spite. Yes! I failed to complete a challenge to blog every day of November 2007. How can anyone reasonably expect to write every day when there is turkey and gravy to be eaten? It just isn’t sane. So, because I am adverse to failure and am obviously a closet masochist, I decided to not only blog every day of one month, but also every day for one year. This probably means that I need medication of some sort.

3) I once dated a comedian (actually, he was more of a stalker) and he was anything but funny off-stage. But your hubby sounds downright hilarious. What is it like being married to a comedian?

Ouch! I feel your pain. I’ve known far too many comedians in my day. As soon as I read this question, first I laughed, and then I visualized several people who could have been your stalker. They aren’t all gems, I’m afraid. I met Phil before he started doing stand-up, so maybe that’s how I was able to step around the minefield. I don’t want this to sound like stand-up comedians are crazy, though. Some are, most aren’t.

Marriage to a comedian has incredible advantages for someone who loves to be amused. We joke all of the time, so much so that it can interfere with even those intimate moments. I recall Phil saying, “Can we stop laughing now and just get down to business?� Our lives are full of mirth, and Phil has taught me to be a happy person and to see the silly things in life. We tend to be great party favors. The downside is that, as a result, I’ve developed what can at times be a rather inappropriate sense of humor. Truthfully, it was always there, but his presence seems to bring it out even more in me.

Just like being married to anyone in the entertainment business, it can be lonely when Phil goes out on the road. Luckily, I have had the chance to be with him at many of those gigs. I never get tired of watching him onstage, no matter how many times I’ve heard the material.

4) How has blogging helped you as a mom?

Before becoming pregnant, I already had a great blog audience. Once I was in the family way, women were attracted to my blog because I wrote in excruciating detail about my pregnancy and the inevitable silly situations. I developed great friendships with many moms and new moms. It was like standing outside of an exclusive club for 33 years, only to be let in with gusto because I allowed Phil’s swimmers to gain the right of way. I guess labor and delivery is the hazing ritual for this club.

Mommyhood is not the easiest thing. I need to vent, and the blog is great for that. I’ve written about sciatica, and the ladies were there to help. I complained about losing friends while pregnant, and the ladies nodded in support. My natural waterbirth was celebrated by them, and they held my virtual hand when I cried about breastfeeding problems. I fret about being a bad mother, or even worse, being called a bad mother, and they’ve got my back. Without the support of other moms, I would not have persevered quite as well. They are my rock.

5) Who reads your blog? My audience is largely mommy bloggers I have never met, along with family and friends who refuse to admit they read it. So perhaps I should rephrase the question: who admits to reading your blog?

Haha! That’s a great way to rephrase that question. It’s true, many people read my blog and do not admit to it. I’m disappointed that many readers do not step up and leave a comment, because I truly enjoy reading their words. It’s a strange relationship to have so many people know me and my little family so intimately, yet in many cases I don’t even know who they are. Or, I already know who they are, but they continue to read and judge me with me their hard stares and mouse clicks. Haha! It’s difficult to judge why they continue to read without responding. Do you despise me? Do you think I’m the ginchiest? It can be disarming to be told, “Oh, yeah. I already know. I read that in your blog.� Then you should have said something to me before! Blogs are a strange but beautiful way to communicate, I suppose.

I absolutely adore the readers that leave comments because often times, the comments section is the most interesting part of the whole discussion. So, I try to respond to their comments in my blog as often as possible. Just like you, I have a lot of other moms as readers. Overall, I still have many readers popping over to my blog from Myspace, so that would be a multitude of friends, family, and random folks who just like to read my silliness. I get readers from other blogs that I comment on, and lately I have a great influx of very talented bloggers reading my words. That is a huge compliment.

6) What helps and tips would you give to the beginning blogger?

Write what you know. If you feel comfortable talking about your life, do that. If you want to review the latest technological gadget, then follow your geeky dreams. Blogging is a diverse world. It has helped me to become a better writer and to vent and be silly in front of a surprising number of people who are willing to listen.

A big no-no is writing about your job. There are many bloggers who have lost their jobs because of their seemingly innocuous opinions about the workplace. It’s far too easy to conduct an Internet search on someone’s name and pull up all kinds of information. For that and other reasons, many bloggers do not reveal actual names of themselves, their friends, or their families. I’m okay with revealing my secret identity. It’s all about your own comfort level.

If you want a readership, you need Mohammad to go the mountain. Read other blogs, leave comments, and network. I know many people who write and write and write, and then scratch their heads over why no one is visiting their blog. I’m not always the best at networking, but I’ve gained great friendships because of it. Appreciate your readers!

7) Where will we find you on December 31st after you have completed your blog marathon?

I will swear off blogs and move to an Amish community where no laptop can be found for miles. Or, I’m sure it will be a repeat of last year’s end. I will be relaxing on the couch with my husband and son. The adults will be nursing a nice glass of wine or perhaps some champagne. We’ll make fun of Ryan Seacrest and joke about who dropped the ball. I’ll soak in the silly little events of the evening and savor the details so that I can spill them onto my blog the next day. Lather, rinse, repeat.
