The Good, the Bad, and the Undies of Motherhood
Britney Spears isnât the only one not winning any motherhood awards in 2008. Although the holidays are now passed, Iâm still in a tailspin and my kids are paying the price. Iâm trying to keep it in perspective, though. At least I havenât lost custody of them. I have a legal driverâs license in the state in which we reside. I havenât shaved my head and I wear undies everyday. See there? I feel better already.
My son lost a tooth more than a week ago. Nine years old and he still faithfully believes in the Tooth Fairy. It hasnât gone unnoticed that night after night she has failed to leave the customary monetary gift under his pillow. To make up for the oversight, I left a dollar and note on floral paper under his pillow while he was at school.
Dear (my sonâs name)
I am sorry it took me so long to collect your tooth. I have been really busy. The Easter Bunny was sick and I had to help him get better. Then I broke my ankle dancing with the leprechauns. I am really behind. I hope you can forgive me.
Love,
The Tooth Fairy
He bought it! He was so excited about his personal note from the Tooth Fairy he asked to have his picture taken with it. What I lack in promptness, I make up for in creativity.
I may have averted that crisis, but there is no excuse for this next example of bad parenting.
Today was my kids’ first day back at school. While gathering coats and backpacks on our way out the door, we realized that my daughterâs coat was missing. A couple quick phone calls to our previous destinations proved to be unfruitful in ascertaining the location of her coat. I looked at my daughter and said,
âI have good news and bad news. The bad news is you are going to be late for school. The good news is we are going shopping for a new coat.â?
We dropped off her brothers and headed to Target for what was supposed to be a quick trip and then right back to school. We found a coat on clearance for $17.00. Score! Then we realized she had P.E. today and my daughter wasnât wearing the appropriate P.E. shoes. So, we went down the shoe aisle, but we couldnât agree on whatâs âappropriate.â? I like dark athletic shoes because they look newer longer. She likes white ones that blink when you walk. Long story short, a coat, P.E. shoes, snow boots, three pairs of earrings, a leopard print fleece jacket, a stuffed animal and a leisurely lunch later, my daughter missed school completely.
I know! Iâm ashamed of myself, too. But I am resolved to do better this New Year. I am already taking steps in the right direction.
Money from the Tooth Fairy? Check.
Coat and P.E. shoes? Check.
Undies? Check.

Haha! I feel your pain. With our inability to make decisions, I’ll be lucky if Amos ever makes it to school and graduates. Is this how home-schooling started? Heheh.

Oh, what a fun mom you are. I have absolutely no problem with my children missing the occasional day of school and spending it with Mom. Your day sounds great (and I don’t even like shopping).

Imaginary Sarah- I belive it is. It’s still hard for me to send my youngest off to school everyday.
I think occasional days off are fine! What’s one missed day of school going to do? Nothing. A fun, bonding day with Mom or Dad? Priceless!

I have forgotten the tooth fairy on many occasions and of course had to creatively coverup the crime. Once we kept telling our son to just leave the tooth under the pillow and she will remember to come eventually. She showed up a week later to retrieve the tooth. Fortunately, our son was okay with this because she left a hefty late fee.
My 1st Grader hasn’t turned in his homework all week because I keep forgetting.
But on the bright side all of my children are still alive and I even fed them.
At least it was a productive, relationship building day. I always believe that education doesn’t always take place in the classroom.
I think I will borrow your tooth fairy idea. It’s a cool one!
Hollly- Now the twins are asking when it’s going to be their to skip school. Geez! I had that comin’.
Lisa L- I tell my kids the more they bleed when they lose a tooth, the more money they get.
K- When we were in high school my mom let us skip school every once in a while. She called them our “Mental Health” days.
If you think that shirking my Tooth Fairy duties and letting my 1st Grader skip her first day back from Christmas break is bad…I wrote this post last week, just wait until you hear how I traumatized my kids today! Stay tuned!
I love the Tooth Fairy note…I would have bought it too, and I am 20.
You are such a cool mom! I had to pretend I was sick to get out of school.
You win the Mommy crown, Annie. I can’t compete!!!
Nice tooth fairy recovery!!!
I had one to many fun ‘Target’ days/Disneyland days/park days/go up to the mountain days with my kids, and *poof* I found myself homeschooling. !!!

I think your kids would say you’re the best mom in the whole wide world!
You cou could do one of those credit card commercials:
jacket on clearance–$17.00
PE shoes–$38.00
snowboots-$22.00
Earrings–$4.00
etc., etc.
Fun day playing hookey with daughter? priceless
I’d say time and money well spent
Annie,
Your a fun, fun mom. Your fun day with your daughter gave me a warm fuzzzy. You and your daughter will look back and enjoy remembering that day over and over again. Loved the tooth fairy story!
